Bucegi mountains are located in central Romania, south of the city Braşov. They are part of the Southern Carpathians group of the Carpathian Mountains.
To the east, the Bucegi mountains have a very steep slope towards the popular tourist destination Prahova Valley (a.o. Buşteni and Sinaia). At a higher elevation is the Bucegi Plateau, where wind and rain have turned the rocks into spectacular figures such as the Sphinx and Babele.
They're grouped in three parts:
- Bucegi Mountains (Omu Peak - 2505 meters)
- Leaota Mountains (Leaota Peak - 2133 meters)
- Piatra Craiului Mountains (Baciului Peak - 2238 meters)
Intensively visited, it is accesible to travelers from several towns-Bucharest, Brasov, Ploiesti, Curtea de Arges-the Bucegi Massif is considered the cradle of Romanian mountain tourism. The tallest peak, Omul, is 2505 m high.
The Sphinx and Babele, megalithic rocks which have given birth to numerous legends and SF hypotheses, have become the emblems of this zone.
The vertical slopes, such as Caraiman and Costila, the valleys with waterfalls, the gorges (Tatarului, Zanoagei and Ursilor) and the alpine lawns are among the many miracles of the fascinating show put on by nature during any season of the year.
Bucegi flower wealth also includes such monuments as the edelweiss, the sweet pea, the Pinus Montana, the yew tree and the Larix decidua.
Here too, the chamois is a star of the animal kingdom while a special status among the 50 species of birds is enjoyed by the golden eagle and the family of royal eagles such as the Aquila Chrysatos and Aquila Helieca.
